Young Marines,
Is everyone ready for this weekend? Well it should be a fun and challenging. We will be going on a 10 mile hike, and checking the weather could get a little wet so please make sure you pack rain gear (i.e. poncho, or rain jacket). Because of the weather please waterproof your clothes as well. A quick and easy way to do this is to pack items in zip lock bags. We will have a qualified Navy Corpsman with us on the hump just in case of any unforeseen circumstance. We will also have a couple of radios along to communicate with base camp and the emergency vehicle. I realize some Young Marines do not have a red t-shirt. I need to know the names and sizes that still need them. For those of you that did not get a Map here is a link to Google Map that has directions on it. We will the public parking lot on the southwest corner of Father Junipero Serra Trail and Bushy Hill Drive at 0800 hr http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=I-15+S&daddr=Father+Junipero+Serra+Trail&geocode=FTCb9QEdkBQF-Q%3BFTAV9QEd2jUG-Q&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=32.844693,-117.032547&sspn=0.139605,0.308647&ie=UTF8&ll=32.847577,-117.083702&spn=0.0698,0.154324&z=13 If anyone still has any questions please give me a call. As for those Young Marines that will not be joining us I am sorry that you could not make it for whatever reason and look forward to seeing you again during our next regular meeting on March 6th. I will have a roster for all those who signed up for this trip at the parking lot to sign in on.
Bellow is some guidance put I have received from the San Diego Young Marines please read bellow so we can make sure we are in-line with them.
Young Marines need to bring for the hump (hike), as little as possible:
3 pairs of white socks in zip lock bags
1 bag of jolly ranchers
1 bag of sunflower seeds
1 bag of beef jerky
1 extra t-shirt
2 canteens
1 camelback
1 poncho
Bring as much water as they can carry (realistically it is 10 miles)
Make sure the Young Marines do not layer for the hike once they start hiking they will warm up quickly.
“Our plans for chow are to have MRE's at noon on Saturday, a hot meal during evening chow, and MRE's for breakfast on Sunday. We have that set up already also. We plan to use light duty YM's as KP during the event.
Our plans are to meet at the public parking lot on the southwest corner of Father Junipero Serra Trail and Bushy Hill Drive at 0800 hrs. We will probably be there for approximately 30-45 minutes. We will then have the YM's march into the campground and leave their gear at space #27. They will then begin their hike. We plan to have classes on map reading and wilderness topics during rest breaks. We hope to give them the information required to sign off on their performance objectives listed in the guidebook.
We will have at least one qualified Corpsman on the hike to take care of lame or injured personnel. “
ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING TIMES OF INSTRUCTION AND ACTIVITIES. INSTRUCTORS WILL HAVE CELL PHONES ON THEM IN CASE YOU NEED TO GET A HOLD OF YOUR YOUNG MARINE FOR EMERGENCIES. POCKET KNIVES, OR MULTI-TOOLS ARE NOT AUTHERIZED FOR YOUNG MARINES.
